Image Publication and Captions — Image Publication and Captions

Tracking down the original publication of a photograph is essential for understanding its true context. For copyright purposes, a photograph is officially published when copies are distributed to the public for the first time.

It is also considered published when copies are offered to a group for further distribution or public display, though public display alone does not constitute publication. Verifying these publication details helps researchers reconstruct the authentic timeline of a visual asset.
