Image Publication Date and Caption — Image Publication Date and Caption

To understand the true story behind a photograph, researchers must trace its original publication details. Under copyright standards, a photograph is published when copies are distributed to the public or offered to a group for further distribution or public display.

Importantly, the public display of a photograph, in and of itself, does not constitute publication. Examining these official publication criteria helps researchers evaluate when and how a visual asset was first made public.
