Pinpointing Publication Date and Original Caption — Pinpointing Publication Date and Original Caption

Under copyright frameworks, a photograph is considered published when copies are distributed to the public for the first time. Publication also occurs when copies are offered to a group for purposes of further distribution or public display, though public display alone does not constitute publication.

Identifying this initial publication date and its original context helps editors verify the true history of an image. Restoring these original details can quickly debunk a false or misleading modern narrative.
