Establish the Current Date — Establish the Current Date

Determining when visual content was first published is essential for establishing an accurate timeline. Under copyright guidelines, a photograph is officially published on the exact date copies are first distributed to the public.

It is also considered published when copies are offered to a group for further distribution or public display, though public display alone does not constitute publication. Verifying these distribution dates helps researchers prevent older imagery from being misrepresented as a current event.
