Identifying who took a photograph helps establish its artistic and legal origin. Generally, the author and initial copyright owner of a photograph is the person who shoots or takes the picture.

An exception to this rule occurs when a photograph is created as a work made for hire. The copyright itself protects the photographer's creative choices, such as lens selection, lighting, and camera placement.
