Pinpointing Image Publication Date and Caption — Pinpointing Image Publication Date and Caption

For copyright purposes, a photograph is published when copies are distributed to the public for the first time. It is also considered published when copies are offered to a group for further distribution or public display, though public display alone does not constitute publication.

Identifying this specific month, day, and year of first publication helps clarify when an image was officially released. This date can be critical for establishing the timeline of a visual narrative.
