Verifying Publication Dates — Verifying Publication Dates

Determining the exact publication date of a photograph is useful for establishing its historical context. Under copyright guidelines, a photograph is considered published when copies are distributed to the public for the first time, or offered to a group for further distribution or public display.

However, the public display of an image, on its own, does not constitute publication. Verifying these distribution details helps researchers clarify when an image was first made available.
