Establishing the As-Of Date — Establishing the "As-Of" Date

To evaluate the timeline of a public-figure visual story, researchers should determine when the associated photographs were first published. Under copyright guidelines, a photograph is published when copies are distributed to the public for the first time.

It is also considered published when copies are offered to a group for further distribution or public display. Knowing this exact date helps clarify the true timeline of the visual media.
